Bridging Realities: VR Meets Creative Expression
In an era where technology is rapidly reshaping our world, the field of creative arts therapies is not far behind. On September 20th, 2024, the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI) in collaboration with Christ (Deemed to be University) School of Psychological Sciences hosted a groundbreaking pre-conference workshop titled "Expanding Horizons: The Future of Creative Expression & Arts Therapies in Virtual Worlds." I was happy to facilitate this innovative event, part of the 10th International Conference at Christ University's Bangalore Central Campus, explored the intersection of emerging technologies and therapeutic practices, with a special focus on virtual reality (VR).
Bridging Realities: VR Meets Creative Expression
The workshop offered a unique blend of embodied experiences and cutting-edge technology. Participants engaged in dynamic movement exercises designed to deepen bodily awareness and foster group connections. These physical activities were seamlessly integrated with VR experiences, allowing attendees to experiment with virtual tools and create immersive art. This innovative approach provided new perspectives on integrating technology into therapeutic practices.
Insights from Participants
The feedback from the workshop was overwhelmingly positive, with an average rating of 4.21 out of 5. A remarkable 86.21% of participants reported gaining new insights or techniques they plan to incorporate into their practice. The integration of VR technology with creative movement practices was widely praised, with most participants describing it as "well integrated."
Therapists and practitioners shared their thoughts on the future of technology in their field:
- "Technology may become an important part of our practice and functioning, fostering the therapeutic practice if used well."
- "I felt the sense that I am catching up with the way of the world... technology is developing at an alarming rate. This feeling is not pleasant but also today's experience served as a reality check."
The Potential of VR in Therapeutic Settings
Participants identified several potential benefits of using VR in therapy:
- "It will help certain clients to come out of their limitations."
- "I feel like certain populations like geriatrics, children, and those with physical disabilities could definitely explore this."
These insights highlight the potential of VR to create more accessible and engaging therapeutic experiences for diverse client groups.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Arts Therapies
As we stand at the cusp of a technological revolution in therapeutic practices, events like this workshop are crucial in preparing practitioners for the future. The integration of VR and other emerging technologies into creative arts therapies opens up new possibilities for expression, healing, and growth.
However, as one participant noted, it's essential to balance technological advancements with the core human elements of therapy: "Honestly, I'm not sure anything will change; perhaps more parents and teachers will be open to using online platforms such as Zoom. The biggest possible change might be blended learning for children to support parents who work in a hybrid format."
This workshop has undoubtedly expanded the horizons of participants, offering a glimpse into a future where virtual and physical realities converge to enhance therapeutic practices. As we move forward, the challenge will be to harness these technologies in ways that amplify, rather than replace, the human connection at the heart of all therapeutic work.
The success of this pre-conference event sets the stage for further exploration and innovation in the field of creative arts therapies. It's clear that the future of therapy will be shaped by those who can skillfully blend traditional practices with emerging technologies, creating new landscapes for healing and self-expression.
